There’s something extra special about photographing families you already know, and this session was one of those moments I’ll always be grateful for. Olivia and I met through our local Carmel MomCo group, so when she reached out about family photos, I was truly honored. Anytime someone I know personally trusts me with documenting their family, it means the world to me. These are the moments that matter most, and it never goes unnoticed when a family invites me into their story.
As we began planning their Carmel, Indiana, summer family photos, Olivia and I worked closely on outfit coordination.
She chose a palette of black, creams, and whites—such a unique and classic take on summer family photos. I instantly fell in love with the look. Against the timeless architecture and soft greenery of Coxhall Gardens, especially the amphitheater backdrop, the neutral tones felt elevated, intentional, and incredibly cohesive. It’s a reminder that summer photos don’t always have to mean bright colors—sometimes simplicity makes the strongest statement.
Of course, summer sessions in Indiana always come with a little unpredictability.
The morning of our original session arrived with intense fog—so thick that we couldn’t get the quality of natural light I strive for. Rescheduling is something I genuinely dislike doing, but I always educate my clients on how important good light is to the final images. Olivia was so understanding and happy to move the session, which I deeply appreciated. When our rescheduled morning arrived, the forecast showed no rain… but Indiana summers had other plans. A pop-up shower rolled in fast. Thanks to years of photographing weddings, I’ve become very comfortable working quickly when needed. We made the most of our time outdoors, capturing beautiful moments before the rain started, and then pivoted seamlessly to their nearby home to finish the session. The flexibility and calm energy of this family made all the difference, and I’m so thankful for their trust through the whole process.
Summer is a wonderful time for morning family photo sessions, especially when kids are out of school.
