Capturing the beauty of your pregnancy through maternity photos is a special experience. It’s a moment in time that celebrates the journey of bringing new life into the world, and the photos serve as a treasured keepsake for years to come. But some of the frequent questions I find expectant moms constantly asking are about when to take maternity photos. Here are some tips to help you decide the perfect timing for your photoshoot, so you can look and feel your best.

When is your due date?

The best time to schedule your maternity photos is typically between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. At this stage, your belly is beautifully rounded, but you’re not too close to your due date, so you’re likely still feeling comfortable.

However, photoshoot date suggestions can vary based on your pregnancy. Here are some tips:

  • First Pregnancy: If this is your first pregnancy, 28-34 weeks is the sweet spot.
  • Second+ Pregnancy: If you’ve been through this before, consider scheduling on the earlier end of this range. Your body may show earlier, and you’ll want to capture that perfect bump before it becomes too uncomfortable.

Expecting Multiples: If you’re carrying twins (or more!), aim for around 26 weeks, or even slightly earlier if this is your first pregnancy. Your belly will grow faster, and you may feel more comfortable getting your photos done sooner.

Where do you want to take your maternity photos?

The time of year can greatly influence the feel and location of your images. So, when you’re figuring out when to take maternity photos, it’s important to think about the weather and if an outdoor or indoor session is best to capture your vision.

Outdoor Sessions

If you’re dreaming of an outdoor shoot, the season and weather are key considerations. For example, spring and summer offer beautiful with lush greenery and warmer temperatures. In the fall, you can capture the warm, golden hues of the season. Winter can be stunning too with snowy landscapes.

Whatever you have in mind, It’s important to discuss possible locations with your maternity photographer to get an idea of what the area will look like when you’re ready to take photos. You might need to push your photoshoot up or delay it to get the look and feel you want in your photos.

Indoor Sessions

If you prefer a more controlled environment, a studio session might be the perfect choice. Studios offer a neutral, simple, and clean backdrop that can be tailored to your style. This option is available year-round, making it perfect if you want to avoid the unpredictability of weather.

Whether you’re looking for something minimalist and modern, or something more classic and timeless, a studio offers endless possibilities.

What do you want to wear?

Your wardrobe plays a significant role in the overall look of your maternity photos. But much like your preferred location will affect when you decide to schedule your photoshoot, what you want to wear may also factor into when you choose to take photos.

If you want outdoor photos and would like to wear light, warm-weather clothes, try to book when the weather will be warmest during your pregnancy. If you have a layered look in mind, consider planning your photoshoot when the temperature drops a little.

Flowing dresses, light fabrics, and soft colors work beautifully in natural settings. However, if the weather doesn’t cooperate, a studio session can always provide a comfortable alternative.
